Barcelona is more than just a fashion. The city’smodel is observed and analyzed by politicians and professionals from around the world. Although each city is different, study of urban transformations in Barcelona, especially during the late nineteenth century and the most recent from the 80s of the twentieth century can be useful for architects worldwide and therefore applicable in other countries.

The Urban Requalification Workshop aims to be a reflection, analysis and participatory study of the Barcelona model, its influence on architecture and society with the ultimate goal to achieve conclusions of universal application.

During a 10 days stay in Barcelona we will attend seminars and lectures by experts in Planning like Arriola&Fiol, we will have a day of work at the University of Barcelona and will complete the study of the city with various sightseeing tours related to the topic of the workshop.



ARRIOLA & FIOL, arquitectes was founded in 1987 with the principal objectives of exploring the interrelationship between Architecture and Urbanism. The ambition was that of closing the traditional gap between these disciplines. This is achieved by means of designing Urbanism based on specific projects and planning Architecture in the public realm.

Andreu Arriola-Madorell

Architect, urban-designer and landscape architect. Member of Catedra J&G at UPC, he is directing his research towards sustainability and technology innovation in social housing. AssociateProfessorat EscolaTècnicaSuperior d’Arquitecturade Barcelona (ETSAB).

Carmen Fiol-Costa

Architect, urban-designer and landscape architect. Proeminentacademic and architectural theorist, she directed the research for her influential book Barcelona PeriferiaCubistaand she earned Doctor Europaeusfrom UPC in 2007 with the new book Grids and Diagonals.


Extension to Bilbao

To take advantage of your trip to Spain, we propose an extension of three days (two nights) to the north, Bilbao. A little getaway with the accompaniment of a guide of Artchitectours (8 hours) to discover the Urban, Economic and Social Regeneration of the Basque capital, and to visit the Guggenheim Museum by Frank Gehry.

The price of this trip to Bilbao is 425 euros/person, double occupancy (min. 4 people).

DAY 1 - October 18th

Participants arrive in the morning, transfer to Hotel and Check-in.

Introductory session / Barcelona’s urban history.

Professor Affonso Orciuoli - International University of Catalonia (UIC).



DAY 2 - October 19th

Relationship Old Town / New Town.

Ciutat Vella (Old Town) / lecture by Arriola&Fiol, urban planners, on how to rehabilitate degraded areas.

Guided tour of the Raval district

Rambla del Raval, MACBA (Richard Meier) and CCCB (Albert Viaplana

Guided tour of the old districts : Gothic, Ribera and Born.

Medieval architecture, Santa Caterina Market (Miralles and Tagliabue), Santa Maria del Mar, Palau de la Música (rehabilitated by Oscar Tusquets) Picasso Museum (renovated by Jordi Garcés) and the Born Market (new cultural space). Plaçadel’Angel and Fossar de les Moreres (Arriola&Fiol)



DAY 3 - October 20th

Lecture on Barcelona’s Heritage by Arriola&Fiol.

Guided tour: Modernist buildings 

Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló, Casa Milà, Casa Thomas and Torre de les Aigües (refurbished by Arriola&Fiol).



DAY 4 - October 21st

Presentation:  Rehabilitation

Las Arenas Shopping Centre by Richard Rogers and Alonso & Balaguer. Parc Joan Miró (Arriola&Fiol).

Montjuïc area: Caixa Forum (Puig I Cadafalch - DAC) , Mies van der Rohe pavilion (entrance included), MNAC, Olympic Stadium.


DAY 5 - October 22nd

Architecture and urban planning for the Olympics 1992.

North Station Park (Arriola&Fiol). Guided tour of the Olympic Village and Olympic Port / Barceloneta. 

Tower Hotel Arts (SOM), the Fish (Frank Gehry) , the Olympic Village (MBM) with its innovative pneumatic waste collection and Passeig Nova Icaria (Enric Miralles). Free afternoon.


DAY 6 - October 23rd

DAY 7 - October 24th

Transforming neighborhoods.

Lecture and visit to Nou Barris neighbourhood by Arriola&Fiol. Parc Central de Nou Barris // Urrutia Tower // Soler and Virrei Amat squares, all by Arriola&Fiol.

New technological district 22@ Visit MediaTic building (Cloud9). Glories Square (explanation about transformation) and Gran Via by Arriola&Fiol. Forum of Cultures area.

DAY 8 - October 25th

Major transport infrastructure. Mobility and accessibility.

Barcelona’s Industrial Harbor / Zona Franca, Metro and Rondes.


DAY 9 - October 26th

Excursion to Girona. City Center and University. Cathedral.

El Mercadal by Arriola&Fiol.


DAY 10 - October 27th

Free day!

Optional: Excursion to Sant Boi (Roman Baths Museum by Arriola&Fiol) and Codorniu.


DAY 11 - October 28th

Breakfast and check-out.

Transfer to Barcelona Airport. 

Flight back to places of origin.
